Adèle est géniale et malgré l air un peu ironique du journaliste qui attend autre chose elle dit exactement ce qu" elle a envie de dire ! Bravo Adèle avec des femmes comme toi on avance. Le film est tout simplement magnifique. I love how Marrianne starts the scene thinking she has everything under control and ends it almost on her knees, fighting with all her might against her own desires. Superb acting by both actresses. Never saw so much chemistry between actors even in straight Hollywood movies couples. Disgusting Oscar snub. Second best 2019 foreign film behind Parasite.

No spoilers but I didn’t breathe for the last few minutes of this movie “ do all lovers feel they’re inventing something? ” the clandestine stealing of forbidden glances. the thankless task of trying to tamp a lover’s image into the folds of your brain. the dread of said image’s inevitable fading. the smoldering slow-burn of impossible yearning, and the explosive fireworks when it’s finally reciprocated. the sizzling sound of a final farewell. director céline sciamma packs each frame with tangible emotion, and she does it all without a manipulative score. we know exactly what to feel at all times, purely on the merit of the leads’ magnetic performances and claire mathon’s luscious cinematography. music is only utilized sparsely (through vivaldi, and through a choral latin chant), and it’s all diegetic, which preserves the film’s veracity. the perfect song seldom plays during our most formative moments, and the perfect person seldom enters our lives at the right time. but sometimes, if we’re lucky enough, they can overlap. its come to my attention that women are the only people who know how to make movies CIFF 2019: film #2 “he doesn’t make the lover’s choice, but the poet’s” my body is still visibly shaken, and i cried the entire duration. i haven’t been this moved by a film in years. not only is it exquisitely made, but the emotional toll it took on me is almost damaging. yearning personified: seen through the stokes of a paintbrush, or across the flames of a fire. crushing and beautiful and fleeting. sometimes all that’s left is the memory, but the memory stays. that last shot is going to haunt me Absolutely no men in sight. And the story becomes void, and like most love stories it tells a story about nothing at all. Cinematografia mozzafiato che corona un film all’inizio molto tranquillo, quasi rilassante; che però a un certo punto diventa intenso e passionale ma sempre molto elegante, mai volgare, anche nelle (pochissime) scene di ‘nudo’. In tutto il film vengono alternate scene “buie” con luce diffusa, notturna, la scena è appena illuminata dal bagliore del fuoco; ad altre “luminose”, la luce del sole che filtra dalle finestre a illuminare gli occhi delle protagoniste, i raggi che riflettono ancora più potentemente sulle pareti, sulle finestre, sulle lenzuola e sulla pelle delle attrici, tutto rigorosamente pallido, che rende la scena molto “bianca” e quindi pura, anche se, poi, di puro il loro rapporto ha poco. Ogni scena è un’opera d’arte, ci si sente in un dipinto anche quando la pittrice non sta effettivamente disegnando. every still was so sensual. made me miss my exgirlfriend Masterpiece. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is at times one of the best films of the decade, with stellar acting by every actress, a daring script that involves slightly taboo themes and a great, yet minimal score.
At other times though, the film is completely ruined by having too long static shots that, while showcasing the actresses" abilities, really bored me and just made me wish the film was over already. That"s a feeling that is also compounded due to the slow pace present. This is especially noticeable when we transition through scenes in a sudden and choppy way, that would be more appropriate for a trailer. The worst part of the editing and the choice of having long shots is that they really turn this movie into a drag. This is a 2 hour long film, that, if it was shot differently, could have had more character development (which it really needs in regard to the relationship portrayed) instead of scenes where no one is doing anything. The only good part of the cinematography, apart from some actually good shots (like all of the campfire scene - that was beautiful) was the absolutely stunning location.
To conclude, this film really disappointed me and it especially hurts since there is something truly great buried within and I can"t fathom how a film that so many seem to love, has so many big issues, turning it into an amateur short film that somehow ended up being 2 hours long.
